Philly Cheesesteak Stuffed Bread

Philly Cheesesteak Stuffed Bread

Linda Wilber
Philly Cheesesteak Stuffed Bread is a fusion dish combining the savory flavors of a classic Philly cheesesteak with the convenience of a stuffed French bread loaf. It's made with thinly sliced steak, sautéed vegetables, provolone cheese, and garlic butter, all baked inside a hollowed-out loaf. It's perfect for a snack, appetizer, or hearty meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 French bread loaf
  • 1 lb thinly sliced steak (or steak-like substitute, e.g., Steak-Umms)
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 6 oz mushrooms, sliced (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 8 slices provolone cheese (or mozzarella for variation)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  • Preheat Oven: Heat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Cook Steak: Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Season the steak with salt and pepper, then cook for about 5 minutes until browned. Remove from pan and set aside.
  • Sauté Vegetables: In the same pan, add butter and remaining olive oil. Cook bell pepper, onion, and mushrooms (if using) until softened, about 5-7 minutes. Add Worcestershire sauce and mix well. Remove from heat.
  • Prepare Bread: Cut the French bread lengthwise and hollow out the center to create a "boat." Brush the inside with melted butter, garlic, and dried parsley mixture.
  • Assemble: Line the bottom of the bread with 4 slices of provolone cheese. Add cooked steak, then the sautéed vegetables, and top with the remaining 4 slices of cheese.
  • Bake: Wrap the bread loosely in foil and bake for 15 minutes. Unwrap and bake an additional 5 minutes to crisp the top and melt the cheese.
  • Slice and Serve: Let the bread cool slightly before slicing into pieces. Serve warm, optionally paired with dipping sauces like garlic aioli or ranch dressing.
